They show up around this time of year, take advantage of our increased happiness caused by the warming weather and the longer days, they take a bunch of our money and then they're gone again, almost as quick as we met them.
You may hear from them again sometime down the road. Some people may even take them home afterwards and enjoy they're fun-loving company occasionally. However, for the most part, once they take their money and give you pleasure for a couple of hours, you'll probably forget about them and never hear from them again.
I'm talking about summer blockbusters in case anybody was confused there.
It's almost an event in movies. Every year around this time hw(hollywood) digs deep into their pockets and dishes out some big bucks to make sure you spend your hard earned money on the biggest, loudest, brightest movies they could haul out of their ass.
Now I'm not saying these movies are bad. But it doesn't matter as far as hw is concerned. The RT(rottentomatoes) or IMDB(internet movie database) scores don't matter as much this time of year. A 70% and up is great but usually you're looking in the 30-50%.
What are you getting for that high-school fail? Usually something extremely loud, with lots of explosions, some A-list actors, and some Michael Bay. Story isn't important. Neither is compelling acting. Shia Lebouf probably wasn't holding his breath for any oscars and neither is Taylor Kitsch this year in Battleship.
Will you remember these movies? Probably. It's hard not to remember when shit goes down and half of an American city is blown halfway to hell in front of your face while your eardrums try to scream how much they hate you but they can't be heard over the sound of explosions.
Will you ever watch these movies again? Probably not. I know I don't. I have a few movies here that I will occasionally turn on if I'm feeling fun a stupid. For the most part though few interest me enough to keep my attention for the first couple of hours.
So this summer do yourselves a favor. Instead of just going to see a movie because it's there and it's big and shiny and begging to be touched. Stay home. Watch a movie inside. Download one or rent one. Either way it's cheaper than the theater and I guarantee it will be a movie you'll remember more then Battleship.
Now I can't tell you what you're going to like but I do have a nice list of 5 movies you should watch that most of you probably haven't seen yet. These are great movies that are not only cheaper than the theater, but you'll probably gain a great friend out if it who you'll wanna hang out with time and time again. You can also watch these at home, with your own free(assuming you have some sitting around) popcorn and then maybe go for a walk afterword. See how helpful I am?
Warrior(2011)
This gem came out last fall but unfortunately it seems like everybody had their fill of fighting movies from last year's The Fighter(also a good movie). This didn't get a lot of attention and didn't do anything special at the box-office. Nick Nolte did get an oscar nod but unfortunately didn't win. I absolutely love this movie and watching Tom Hardy ruin people the way he does in this movie is something to see(probably practicing for Batman).
Attack the Block(2011)
So you like watching alien invasions? Well this movie will show you that there are better ways to do that in a movie than spending $300 bajillion dollars with plenty of silly looking special effects and the same recycled alien. In fact this is one of the best alien invasion movies I've ever seen. It's got some comedy and it's got incredibly bad-ass moments. Nice tidbit about this movie is they hardly used any CGI. A lot of guys in suits.
Fantastic Mr. Fox(2009)
Not in a mood for aliens or people getting dummied? Want something to watch with the kids? Fair enough. Give this one a try. Wes Anderson does an awesome job with this stop-motion movie and it's got a solid cast behind it. The humor is good for the family but a few things only older people will get. It's one of the better "feel good" movies I've seen in a while that hasn't come out of Disney Pixar.
Nowhere Boy(2010)
When people think of the Beatles they usually go straight to the music. That makes sense. If you're mind doesn't go straight there then there's something wrong with you, go see a head doctor. But John Lennon did do things before he was bigger than Jesus. This movie shows some of those things and it does it with some extremely good acting. I'll be honest and the movie didn't hook me right away but by the end of it I was very glad I watched. This also has one of my favorite new up and coming actors Aaron Johnson(Kick Ass, the upcoming Savages) and he does a superb job.
Shame(2011)
This one won't be for everyone but it's a great movie. It follows a guy who has a addiction to sex. Simple. Michael Fassbender is another amazing actor and he does a rock solid job(pun intended) in this movie. It makes me lose faith in the oscars that he didn't get a nod for his performance here. Ladies, you do get to see his shlong. Guys, there are boobies to even it all out. This is a dark movie but worth the watch.
So there you have it. Five movies that will make your lives considerably better(probably). I hope you guys give at least some of these a try and if anybody needs a copy of anything let me know and I can try to hook you up or point you in the best direction to find it. Also, would love to hear what you think of any of the ones you watch.
Cheers!
